ISLAMABAD: The Rectors and Vice-Chancellors of over 70 public sector universities attended the 11th Vice-Chancellors' Committee meeting held at a local hotel.  Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, Chairperson Vice-Chancellors Committee/Executive Director HEC, in his opening remarks, welcomed the Vice-Chancellors and hoped that new year 2013 would  prove more fruitful for the higher education sector of the country. 
Dr. Javaid R. Laghari, Chairperson HEC in his address on the occasion said that due to recent historic decision of Supreme Court of Pakistan the autonomy of HEC has been preserved.  He assured the Vice-Chancellor that the Supreme Court decision would be implemented in letter and spirit and the new executive director would be appointed within the stipulated time. He said HEC along with universities, single most important stakeholder, would continue playing its role for boosting up higher education sector in Pakistan. 
The trophy of 32nd National Games was presented to Chairperson HEC. It merits mention here that the HEC has grabbed second position in 32nd National Games with 29 gold, 62 silver, 74 bronze with total 165 medals and 2935 points. 
The meeting deliberated upon financial issues, proposed establishment of provincial higher education councils, recent amendments in the university Act by the Punjab government, and revitalizing HEC. 
Rich tributes were paid to the outgoing Executive Director HEC, Prof. Dr. Sohail H. Naqvi for his excellent contribution and dedication towards the promotion of higher education sector in Pakistan. The Vice-Chancellor termed him a towering figure and recalled his tenure as golden period for the development of higher education sector in Pakistan. He was also presented souvenirs by HEC and Inter-University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan.
The participants of the meeting decided that a committee would be formulated to examine issues related to a national higher education sector testing system.
