ISLAMABAD: A migrant boat carrying 65 passengers capsized near Libya’s Marsa Dila Port, with 10 bodies recovered so far, according to the Anti-Human Smuggling Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), citing international news agencies.

This marks the fourth such incident in the past two years, raising concerns over illegal human trafficking networks and the dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous sea journeys.

Pakistan’s Response and Investigations

  • The Pakistani Embassy in Tripoli has dispatched a team to Zawiya Hospital to assist in identifying the deceased and coordinate with local authorities.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Crisis Management Unit has been activated to gather further details on Pakistani nationals involved.
  • FIA Crackdown: The Establishment Division has removed the Director General (DG) FIA and dismissed over 40 officials for their alleged involvement in human smuggling networks.

Libyan Authorities’ Efforts

  • The Libyan Red Crescent confirmed the recovery of 10 bodies in Zawiya and handed them over to local authorities.
  • Investigation Underway: Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the sinking or the identities of the remaining passengers.
