ECP to hear PTI petition against Maryam today

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will hear the petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for disqualification of Maryam Nawaz as the vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on June 17.
Notices have been issued in this regard. A three-member ECP bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Sardar Raza Khan, will hear the petition filed by parliamentary secretaries Farrukh Habib, Malika Bukhari, Kanwal Shauzab and Javeria Zafar.
As per the petition, the PML-N’s decision to keep Maryam as the party’s vice president goes against the law and the Constitution.
It stated that an accountability court declared Maryam guilty in the Avenfield properties corruption reference in July 2018; therefore, she could not keep any party position. The Supreme Court had also disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from the position of PML-N president after the accountability court convicted him, stated the petition.
In a major party reshuffle in May, Maryam was made one of the 16 vice presidents of the party along with Hamza Shehbaz, who is the current Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly. Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was appointed as the senior vice president, while Ahsan Iqbal was made the general secretary.
