Impact of social media on teenagers


What exactly is social media? It’s a platform for everyone to stay in touch with each other and share their ideas, thoughts on an app, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Around 90% of teenagers from age 13-17 use social media, 75% of teenagers at least have one active social media account and around 51% use social media daily. Accordingly, social media is very common among teenagers today. However, it does have numerous advantages and disadvantages.
Let us talk about the advantages, first. There are many advantages like, you have a sincere connection with your followers and with the people you meet online, and you can create your original content, you can start your own business or brand, furthermore you can also catch up with the latest news and get to know what’s going around the globe, you can express your talent on social media and people will support you, in this way you also inspire others.
If you feel dull and bored, social media also provides a great source of entertainment. If you want to create viral content, social media platforms are perfect for it. One can also spread awareness about different topics, and can also improve your performance.
Let’s talk about the disadvantages now. There are several disadvantages, such as many teenagers today have been the victim of cyberbullying, which is very harmful and can affect a person’s mental health and physical health greatly and builds fear in them, it also has a strong association with depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Many teens today have a poor concentration towards school work and give more time to their devices instead of their studies, they spend most of their time on their phones specifically on social media which can cause failure. Moreover, one becomes ungrateful for what they have and wishes for more, they desire for more, and for what they see on social media. It also lower’s one’s self-confidence and self-esteem, they turn to be insecure about themselves, even though no one in this world is perfect, everybody has insecurities but we should love ourselves no matter what, considering we are all different from each other and unique in our own way. It builds an unhealthy addiction with their phones, thus it can cause, eye problems, sleep problems, anxiety, back pain and can also affect your mental health.
Next is online stalking and stealing of data/pictures. If a person pretending to be someone else or someone whom you know can easily have access to your data and misuse it. Sleep deprivation is very common among teenagers today, having said that not getting enough sleep can affect their immune system, mental and physical health, moreover sleep deprivation can cause tiredness throughout the day and also affects your concentration towards other things.
Many teens today compare themselves with celebrities and influencers and desire to be more pretty, slim, rich etc., they believe in what they see, which are only one’s expectations, reality is far different from what we see on social media. No one knows what is going on in one’s life. Lastly, I would like to mention that, no one’s life is as perfect as it seems, who knows what is behind one’s so-called perfect lifestyle.
