Plan Underway to Lower Electricity Tariffs: Federal Power Minister

Federal Minister of Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari announced that the government is preparing an action plan to reduce electricity tariffs by implementing reforms in the power sector. This plan aims to minimize line losses, lower production costs, and pass savings on to consumers.

Leghari’s comments follow Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent directives to address power sector issues, including electricity theft and the performance of distribution companies (Discos). The Prime Minister has emphasized the need for coordination with provinces to prevent power pilferage and improve Disco operations.

Leghari highlighted that significant progress has been made in tackling electricity theft, with hopes to reduce pilferage by an additional 40% through revolutionary reforms. The government has taken decisive steps to address power theft, including appointing apolitical and independent members to Disco Boards of Directors (BODs) and granting Discos greater autonomy to handle theft issues.

The minister commended the performance of Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) and directed its officers to focus on eliminating power theft and improving bill recovery. Under a recent initiative, electricity consumers have received relief worth Rs. 45 billion in collaboration with the Punjab government.

CEO of FESCO, Engineer Muhammad Amir, reported that over 11,000 cases of power theft have been detected since September 2023, with significant fines imposed and several employees disciplined. The meeting also included senior officials and board members, who discussed ongoing efforts to combat power theft and enhance consumer services.
