ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged the overseas expatriates on Friday evening to send home foreign exchange to support the government to build dam.
In a very brief and precise speech through state-run PTV, Prime Minister Imran Khan asked the overseas Pakistanis that the donations can be deposited into the dams fund set up by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Worth to note is that every year Pakistanis are sending about 20 billion dollars worth of remittances to their motherland that is the second biggest source of foreign exchange income of the country after exports.
“There is no question that we are facing several problems,” the prime minister said as he began the address, “but the biggest problem we are currently facing is the water crisis.”
Warning of the rapid depletion in Pakistan’s water resources, PM Imran Khan said the country would face drought-like conditions by 2025 if dams are not constructed.
“I want to commend Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar for launching the dams fund, but this was not his job,” he said, adding this was the job of civilian leaders who knew this was going to swell into a crisis but did nothing to overcome this major problem.”
“I want to take over the fund-raising and want overseas Pakistanis to contribute like they used to do for the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, he said.
The prime minister asked all overseas Pakistanis to make as many donations as they can to the dams fund in dollars to plug the country’s depleting foreign exchange reserves as well as provide funding to start building dams, which he said he would personally oversee.
“I will safeguard your donations,” he promised.
“If every overseas Pakistani donates $1,000, we will have enough money to build the dams ourselves,” he said.
The Premier said that this fund will only be used for building dams. I know not every overseas Pakistani will be able to give $1,000, especially the ones working in the Middle East. To them, I would say that donate as much as you can manage easily. However, the overseas Pakistanis living in Europe and the United States must send at least $1,000, he added.
Prime Minister said that more than 9 million Pakistanis are living in different countries who can send foreign exchange to their motherland. In next five years, we can construct a mega dam with the financial support of millions of the overseas Pakistanis, he added.
The Prime Minsiter Imran Khan gave the example of Egypt, which he said, had launched a similar drive to build dams using its own resources.
“They were not getting any external loans; no one will give us any loans from outside. We already have so many loans that we are finding hard to repay, so no one is going to give us loans anymore,” he said.
He pointed out that delay in the construction of dams was leading to increase in their cost of construction every year.
