ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan on Tuesday fired a broadside at opposition politicians saying had they been truthful they would have presented evidence in lieu of making hue and cry over democracy “being threatened by NAB actions against them”.
In a series of tweets, she said these politicians are bearing the brunt of their own actions as they were the ones behind the formation of the corruption watchdog and appointment of the incumbent NAB chairman. “Did we put out Panama Papers,” she asked.
The special assistant said the popularity of the PPP, which she said has now been confined to Sindh province, has reduced to zero among the masses, which was evident from the number of people who staged protests over former president Asif Ali Zardari’s arrest.
Taking aim at the PML-N, she said it is evident from history that the party had come to power with the help of others. They can just conspire and not stage protests, she was of the view.
Ms Awan said these corrupt elements will embarrass themselves by launching a movement against the government.
It may be noted that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested former President Asif Ali Zardari from his house in Islamabad on Monday evening.
His arrest comes following rejection of the petitions filed by him and his sister Faryal Talpur by a two member bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Kiani of Islamabad High Court earlier today in fake bank accounts case.
Asif Ali Zardari will now be transferred to NAB office in Rawalpindi.
The NAB team did not arrest Faryal Talpur though.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ijaz Ahmed Shah said the Islamabad High Court has rejected bail plea of former President Asif Ali Zardari and the government has nothing to do with it.
Responding to a point raised by PPP Leader Shazia Marri, he said it is court decision in which government has no role.
Meanwhile, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan says courts and institutions are free in Naya Pakistan and no one is in above law.
She was commenting on the arrest of Hamza Shehbaz while talking to the PTV on Tuesday.
The Special Assistant said National Accountability Bureau is an independent organization and government has nothing to do with it.
She said the arrest of influential people is endorsement of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s narrative of accountability across the board.
Lamenting the posture of opposition on the arrest of corrupt elements, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said they are oblivious to the problems of masses but are protecting their own vested interests.
Meanwhile, talking to media outside the Parliament House in Islamabad on Tuesday, Special Assistant on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan says budget will be a poor friendly which will reflect Prime Minister Imran Khan’s concern for downtrodden people of the country.
She said it is constitutional responsibility of the government and the opposition to work together for the betterment of masses.
She said the government will welcome suggestions from opposition to improve the budget document. – NNI
