Following Ankara’s purchase of S-400 missile defence system from Russia, US has formally cancelled selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.

US President Trump Trump said it was not fair that when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “really wanted” to buy the Patriot surface-to-air missile system, something which the previous Obama administration did not sell it. He said “The Obama administration would not sell them the Patriot missiles…. They would not sell them under any circumstance,”

Regarding this decision, Trump told the reporters during a cabinet meeting at the White House that “We have a situation where Turkey is very good with us, very good. And we are now telling Turkey that because you have really been forced to buy another missile system, we’re not going to sell you the F-35 fighter jets,”

The F-35 fighter jet is a fifth generation, stealthy, multi-role aircraft which is designed particularly for ground attack and air superiority missions.

According to the current laws of United States, any country buying a major defense equipment from Russia will be subject to American Sanctions.

This may warn  India as they have also signed up with Russia to buy the S-400 missile defense system against the advice of the US.
