Muahammad Umar Waqas

As Pakistan approaches the announcement of the Federal Budget 2026–27, Shahzad Arif, CEO of AKS iQ, says the country stands at a pivotal moment in its economic journey. Shahzad Arif says the information technology sector has emerged as one of Pakistan’s strongest contributors to exports, foreign exchange earnings, employment generation, and global competitiveness. He says the upcoming budget presents an important opportunity for policymakers to send a clear message that Pakistan is committed to building a globally competitive digital economy. The technology sector has consistently demonstrated resilience and growth despite economic challenges, but unlocking its full potential requires targeted reforms and long-term policy certainty.

Shahzad Arif serves as the Chief Executive Officer of AKS iQ, a technology company specializing in software development, digital transformation, enterprise solutions, artificial intelligence, and innovation-driven services. He says Pakistani software engineers, developers, freelancers, and technology entrepreneurs are already competing successfully on the global stage, but stronger policy support can help accelerate growth even further.

Presenting his recommendations for the Federal Budget 2026–27, Shahzad Arif says the following measures can significantly strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy and technology exports:

1. Establish a Stable and Predictable Tax Regime

Shahzad says the government should establish a stable, transparent, and predictable tax regime for IT exporters and freelancers, backed by a long-term policy commitment of at least ten years. He says frequent changes in taxation policies create uncertainty for businesses and investors. Long-term predictability will encourage investment, facilitate business planning, and strengthen investor confidence in Pakistan’s technology sector.

2. Facilitate Access to International Payment Gateways

Shahzad Arif says the government should facilitate access to international payment gateways such as PayPal or introduce a comparable government-supported solution. He says Pakistani freelancers and IT companies continue to face challenges in receiving payments from international clients. Efficient and seamless payment mechanisms are essential for enhancing Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

3. Increase Foreign Currency Retention for IT Exporters

Shahzad says IT exporters should be allowed to retain a larger portion of their export earnings in foreign currency accounts. He says technology businesses frequently require payments for cloud services, software subscriptions, digital tools, international marketing campaigns, and overseas vendors. He says greater flexibility in utilizing foreign exchange earnings would support business growth and international expansion.

4. Introduce Incentives for AI, R&D, Cybersecurity, and Emerging Technologies

Shahzad Arif says the government should introduce targeted tax incentives, grants, and support programs for investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Research and Development (R&D), cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and workforce upskilling initiatives. The future global economy will be driven by innovation. He says Pakistan must position itself as a producer of advanced technology solutions rather than merely a consumer.

5. Simplify Tax Filing and Regulatory Compliance

Shahzad Arif says export-oriented technology companies would greatly benefit from simplified tax filing procedures, regulatory compliance requirements, and refund mechanisms. He says excessive administrative burdens consume valuable resources that could otherwise be invested in innovation, client acquisition, and business expansion. A streamlined compliance framework would significantly improve the ease of doing business.

6. Ensure Reliable Electricity and High-Speed Internet

Shahzad Arif says uninterrupted access to reliable electricity and high-speed internet infrastructure is essential for the growth of Pakistan’s technology sector. He says these are no longer optional utilities but fundamental requirements for technology businesses. Even minor disruptions can affect productivity, project delivery timelines, and client confidence. He says investments in digital infrastructure should be treated as investments in export growth.

7. Prioritize Pakistani Technology Companies in Government Projects

Shahzad Arif says qualified Pakistani software houses and technology firms should be prioritized in government digital transformation and e-governance projects while maintaining transparent and merit-based procurement processes. Local companies possess the expertise needed to deliver innovative solutions and can play a major role in modernizing public services. He says this approach will simultaneously strengthen the domestic technology ecosystem.

8. Introduce Incentives for Export-Generating Technology Companies

Shahzad says the government should introduce incentives and recognition programs for companies that generate foreign exchange earnings by attracting international clients and expanding Pakistan’s IT exports. He says rewarding export-oriented success stories will encourage more businesses to pursue global markets. Such measures will directly contribute to national economic objectives and export growth.

9. Streamline International Banking and Cross-Border Operations

Shahzad Arif points out that international banking processes, merchant account approvals, foreign remittance procedures, and cross-border business operations should be simplified. He says many technology companies face operational challenges when engaging with global clients and service providers. Removing these barriers will improve Pakistan’s attractiveness as a destination for technology investment and international business partnerships.

10. Strengthen Support for Startups and SaaS Companies

Shahzad Arif says dedicated support programs, funding mechanisms, and growth incentives should be established for startups, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies, and technology entrepreneurs. He says startups are often the source of breakthrough innovations, high-value jobs, and future export revenues. Supporting entrepreneurial growth today will help build the globally competitive technology companies of tomorrow.

Concluding his recommendations, Shahzad Arif says the Federal Budget 2026–27 should not be viewed merely as an annual financial exercise. He says it should serve as a strategic roadmap for Pakistan’s economic future. Shahzad Arif says the technology sector offers a unique opportunity to generate sustainable export earnings, create high-quality employment, attract foreign investment, and position Pakistan as a competitive player in the global digital economy.

Shahzad Arif says he is confident that with the right policy measures, Pakistan’s IT industry can significantly increase its contribution to national GDP and foreign exchange reserves over the coming years. He says the talent exists, the opportunities are abundant, and the global demand for technology services continues to grow. Shahzad Arif says what is needed now is a supportive policy environment that enables businesses to innovate, scale, and compete internationally. He says the decisions made today will shape the country’s competitiveness and economic trajectory for years to come.

Episode II — “Weaving Global Dreams: The Rise and Legacy of Moazzam Khan”

When Moazzam Khan embarked on his solo venture with Moazzam Khan Couture in 2017, the fashion industry stood at the threshold of transformation. Bridal fashion in Pakistan had evolved beyond local markets into international demand. Couture houses were no longer confined to Karachi’s boutiques, designs were shipped to brides around the world. Against this backdrop, Moazzam’s signature approach marrying traditional craftsmanship with modern sophistication placed him at the forefront of a new era.
From the moment he launched his first solo bridal collection, aptly titled “Scintillation”, Moazzam made it clear: this was not incremental refinement but artistic elevation. The collection drew inspiration from gemstone brilliance and was divided into themes based on colors and emotions. Each piece conveyed a story, not just of fabric and thread, but of cultural narrative translated into contemporary form.
Under his direction, Moazzam Khan Couture expanded offerings beyond bridal wear to include party formals, sarees, and unstitched ensembles creating a full spectrum of luxury fashion. Despite this diversification, the studio’s foundation remained consistent: meticulous craftsmanship and personalized design experience. Clients could engage directly with the design process, ensuring each outfit resonated with personal taste and cultural symbolism.
As Pakistani fashion began attracting global attention, notably through fashion weeks, industry events, and international media; Moazzam’s work found resonance beyond borders. His couture pieces, rich with handcrafted detail and rooted in South Asian techniques, appealed not only to Pakistani and South Asian brides abroad but also to fashion connoisseurs seeking unique cultural expression. He traveled extensively, bringing his designs to markets that had previously remained untapped. His work showcased Pakistan’s design capabilities in Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Central Asia, the UK, and the United States.
Yet what differentiated Moazzam was not merely the volume of artistry but its philosophy. While many designers leaned on rapid production and trend- driven collections, Moazzam emphasized craft and cultural continuity, particularly in hand embroidery techniques like zardozi and chikankari, which are historic symbols of South Asian attire. Through his studio, he nurtured artisan skills, creating opportunities for craftsmen whose expertise is central to bridal couture yet often underrecognized.
Beyond craftsmanship, Moazzam also engaged with innovation, recognizing that fashion must evolve with technology. He spoke publicly about how digital tools and advanced design processes were reshaping fashion, allowing designers to visualize, develop, and refine creations with greater efficiency and consistency. Yet his focus remained on blending technology with tradition, not replacing human artistry.
This blend of heritage and modernity reflected broader trends in Pakistan’s fashion industry. Events like Pakistan Fashion Design Council and Fashion Pakistan Week provided platforms for designers, fostering creativity and brand growth. Moazzam’s presence at such forums not only elevated his profile but helped project Pakistan’s creative potential onto global stages.
Underpinning Moazzam’s success has been his belief that fashion isn’t solely aesthetic, it’s narrative. Bridal couture, in particular, embodies personal and cultural histories. A bride’s dress is symbolic of her identity, heritage, and new beginnings. With this perspective, Moazzam treats each garment as a canvas of emotion, a belief that resonates deeply with clients domestically and abroad.

While Moazzam Khan Couture has amassed notable prestige and a loyal clientele, Moazzam’s vision extends beyond boutiques and runways. His ambition includes expanding into accessories, jewelry, and even fragrance lines

creating a complete fashion ecosystem where a bride’s ensemble is a unified artistic expression. This strategy reflects his long-term understanding of fashion as lifestyle, not just apparel.
Perhaps most importantly, Moazzam’s legacy lies in what he represents: a bridge between tradition and modernity. In an industry often defined by fleeting trends, he stands for continuity, substance, and meaning. Pakistani fashion; its textiles, tapestries, and threads carries centuries of cultural heritage. Through his work, Moazzam has ensured that this legacy doesn’t simply endure but evolves with relevance, creativity, and global admiration.
In future chapters of the country’s fashion renaissance, designers like Moazzam Khan will be remembered not just for garments crafted but for the narratives woven stories of identity, artistry, and the enduring power of design rooted in the culture of the sub continent.

As we conclude this special series, the journey of Moazzam Khan resonates far beyond the realm of couture. From the creative lanes of Karachi to international showcases, his work has carried with it the colors, craftsmanship, and cultural pride of Pakistan. Every intricate embroidery and bridal masterpiece emerging from Moazzam Khan Couture reflects not only artistic excellence but a deep reverence for national heritage. In celebrating his success, we celebrate the spirit of Pakistan itself, resilient, creative, and rich with tradition. His legacy reminds us that when our artisans and visionaries are given space to dream, they do more than build brands; they elevate the image of their country on the global stage, stitching patriotism into every thread.

Muhammad Umar Waqqas

KARACHI: As Gulf regulators intensify scrutiny on trade-based money laundering (TBML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT), financial institutions across the region are under mounting pressure to ensure that trade financing channels do not become conduits for illicit flows. In response, a new technology player from Pakistan Trade iQ™ is emerging as a compelling, production-proven option for banks seeking to elevate controls without compromising the speed and ease of legitimate commerce.

Developed and deployed by trade compliance specialists with deep banking experience, Trade iQ is built as a unified platform rather than a collection of point solutions. It integrates all key phases of trade compliance, initial screening, continuous monitoring, holistic investigation, and regulatory reporting into a single, fully digital workflow. This enables banks to reduce manual hand-offs, eliminate duplicate checks, and accelerate decision-making with a complete, auditable trail.

Shahzad Arif, the CEO of AKS iQ, an AI technology company recognized for its flagship product, Trade iQ™ says “At the core of the system is an AI-driven rules engine that operationalizes policy across a wide range of risk scenarios. These include trade KYC and customer risk scoring, sanctions and politically exposed persons (PEP) screening, red-flag assessments involving dual-use goods and HS-code intelligence, fair-value and price variance analysis, vessel and container risk profiles, routing and transshipment risk, and real-time transaction behavior monitoring. Combined, they offer a 360-degree view of risk that supports consistent diligence at every step of the trade lifecycle. Trade iQ is already successfully running live with local and multinational banks in Pakistan and the UAE, and is supporting compliance across various international jurisdictions through existing customer networks. Architected with bank-grade security, high availability, and strong performance, the platform scales easily from individual trade desks to multi-country operations, a growing requirement as GCC banking groups standardize controls across subsidiaries and branches.”

He added “For regulators, visibility and explainability are now as important as coverage. Trade iQ addresses this shift by embedding transparent, supervisory-ready evidence into the heart of the system. Every rule is version-controlled and tied back to relevant policy or regulatory guidelines. Each alert includes contextual rationale, analyst documentation, attachments, and quality assurance trails; all feeding directly into management information dashboards. Boards, executives, and risk committees gain corridor-level insights into alert precision, reviewer productivity, turnaround time (TAT) improvements, and closure outcomes supporting regulatory expectations for continuous control assurance. Early adopters of the platform report compelling results: reductions in false positives that lower operational fatigue, measurable improvements in TAT from screening to closure, and the availability of clean, consolidated audit packages ready for internal validation and supervisory review. Banks emphasize the practical advantage of maintaining a single rulebook and single evidence trail across sanctions, pricing, routing, and behavioral assessments significantly reducing the risk of control gaps or policy drift.”

Shahzad Arif says “Trade iQ’s implementation model is structured to minimize disruption and accelerate value. Institutions commonly begin with focused flows, expand to all trade products in stages, and host joint review sessions with supervisory teams to demonstrate outcomes, governance structures, and model lifecycle management. The rise of Trade iQ also represents a broader evolution in Pakistan’s technology sector from outsourcing-heavy service delivery toward exportable, regulator-grade intellectual property tailored for global markets. For GCC and Saudi banks facing increasingly sophisticated financial crime risks, the platform offers a practical and timely proposition: unified controls, explainable AI, localization and data-sovereignty readiness, and supervisory-grade evidence by design.”

“As Gulf economies continue to expand their role in global trade corridors, the importance of strong, efficient, and harmonized trade compliance frameworks will only grow. Platforms like Trade iQ are positioning the region’s banks to meet this challenge, safeguarding financial integrity while powering the seamless flow of legitimate trade.” Shahzad Arif tells The Financial Daily.

The impact of technology on fashion design and retail is profound, enhancing creativity, efficiency, and customer engagement.

Report by TFD

In recent years, technology has dramatically transformed the fashion industry, reshaping both design processes and retail practices. Advancements in technology are playing a significant role in driving innovation within the Pakistani fashion industry. From 3D printing to virtual reality (VR) fashion shows, designers are harnessing technology to push the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship.

One of the most significant changes brought about by technology is the integration of digital design tools. Designers now have access to sophisticated software that allows them to create intricate designs and visualize their ideas in 3D. This technology streamlines the design process, enabling designers to experiment with various patterns, colors, and styles without the need for physical prototypes. As a result, the time taken to bring a concept to market has significantly decreased, allowing fashion brands to respond more swiftly to emerging trends.

Senior fashion designer Moazzam Khan says “AI is transforming the fashion business by streamlining operations such as product development, supply chain optimization, and marketing. Tools such as trend analysis, generative design, inventory management, and virtual try-ons improve creativity, efficiency, and sustainability.”

He added “Another crucial aspect of technology’s impact on fashion designs is the growing trend of sustainability. Advanced technologies such as 3D printing and sustainable fabric production techniques are enabling designers to create eco-friendly collections. This shift toward sustainability resonates with environmentally conscious consumers, fostering brand loyalty and promoting a more responsible fashion industry.”

Previously Moazzam Khan’s design team worked manually. They drafted patterns by hand on paper and assessed design and fit with physical samples. Moazzam explains, “There was a lot of human error. When it went into production, we saw a lot of fit and grading issues.” Moazzam attributes these issues to the minute differences in the “hand” of each designer. These small differences translate to bigger disparities in bulk production.

With a vision to expand, the IT team also saw a need for more robust infrastructure in the design department. Growing globally requires scalability. Scalability requires lower lead times, higher levels of technology, and higher levels of automation. For this reason, Moazzam Khan initiated a digital design transformation department in his studio.

Pakistani bridal dress tailoring typically involves intricate hand embroidery, often using techniques like zardozi, dabka, and gota work, along with embellishments like sequins and beads. The designs are rich, complicated and traditional, featuring floral or geometric patterns and often covering the entire dress, especially the neckline, hem, and sleeves. It requires intensively balanced tailoring. Addition of technology reduces the chances of human error possibilities.

Worldwide, the fashion designers work from graded digital pattern blocks. This frees them to make style line changes without disturbing the fit. Since every style comes from the same blocks, fit is more consistent between styles. In addition, the fashion designers simulate their styles. They understand how each garment will drape and fit with real-time motion simulation. The draped silhouettes become like digital “blanks” for designers to visualize their artwork. They arrange repeats, placement prints, and embroideries on the 3D sample. Then each department reviews the full collection digitally, before any physical samples are made. Since design evaluations now happen virtually, the team makes decisions quickly without wasting resources. The designers focus on creativity, rather than getting involved with administrative or operational issues.

Pakistani fashion evolution is deeply inspired by its rich culture. It is a perfect replica of tradition, culture with modern cuts. Over the years, it has changed and evolved. Technology has reshaped how the Pakistani fashion industry used to be. The textile industry is the backbone of Pakistan’s fashion scene. There have been significant changes over the years in the Pakistani fashion industry, which have made it easier to bring in the most creative ideas.

Innovation in Pakistani textiles is no longer restricted to local runways; it’s making its mark globally. Esteemed designers like Moazzam Khan have brought the elegance and vibrancy of Pakistani couture to the world stage. Events like the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) and Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW) have become prime platforms for showcasing the creative brilliance of such designers. These high-profile gatherings not only celebrate local talent but also attract international buyers and media, paving the way for exciting global collaborations.

Moazzam Khan says “I don’t mean to replace technology with my incredibly talented and dedicated artisans. The impact of the Pakistani fashion industry extends beyond aesthetics—it’s transforming lives. Many saree brands are now partnering with local artisans, giving them a platform to display their remarkable craftsmanship in sarees, too. This collaboration not only preserves traditional techniques but also provides artisans with a steady income and wider recognition for their work.”

“Women are the backbone of Pakistan’s fashion industry, contributing their skills in stitching, embroidery, and more. Recognizing their vital role, many initiatives within the industry focus on fair wages and training programs, enabling women to gain financial independence and improve their quality of life.” Moazzam Khan tells The Financial Daily.

Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL) reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to Pakistan’s automobile industry during a media briefing led by Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, CEO & Managing Director of PSMCL.

Reflecting on Suzuki’s pioneering journey and over four decades of presence in the country, Mr. Kawamura stated, “Pak Suzuki has always remained committed to its mission of providing affordable mobility to enrich the lives of people of Pakistan. For Suzuki, Pakistan holds a special place—it was the first country outside Japan where Suzuki began automobile production in 1975, even before the formation of Pak Suzuki in 1983.”

He added, “Over the years, Suzuki has earned the trust of over 2.5 million customers, becoming a household name synonymous with reliability and value.”

Highlighting Pak Suzuki’s commitment to the local market, Mr. Kawamura stated, “We invested PKR 17.4 billion in the development and localization of our new model Suzuki Every alone. We remain steadfast in driving economic growth and job creation in Pakistan.”

Mr. Kawamura emphasized the need for policy support from the government to drive industry growth. He urged the government to incentivize exports instead of imposing mandatory targets. Commenting on the government’s intention to enhance the Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM) sector, he pointed out that approximately 25% of the market is occupied by imported used cars. “Curbing this could lead to a significant increase in local industry output,” he said.

He also urged the government to eliminate duty concessions for used car imports under 1300cc, as 75% of used car imports fall within this segment due to very low fixed taxes. He recommended reducing the age limit of imported vans to 3 years from the current 5-year limit.

Discussing sustainability, Mr. Kawamura said that the key focus of Pak Suzuki’s strategy for sustainable development is to rely on locally available resources. He introduced Pak Suzuki’s Biogas Project, which aims to convert bio-waste into clean and renewable fuel. “Using biogas as automobile fuel could be a breakthrough solution for Pakistan,” he stated. “It has the potential to improve the trade balance, protect the environment, and create employment in the rural areas of Pakistan.”

In conclusion, Mr. Kawamura reaffirmed Pak Suzuki’s commitment to growing alongside the people of Pakistan. He added that the company remains deeply committed to innovation, sustainability, and strengthening the local economy. He highlighted Pak Suzuki’s extensive nationwide network of 175 dealership outlets across more than 100 cities—three times larger than any other OEM in the country.

Sharing an optimistic outlook for the domestic market, he said, “The automobile CKD market is projected to grow by more than 20% this year. Pak Suzuki is well-positioned to retain its 45% market share.”

On the exports front, Mr. Kawamura noted that in the past, Pak Suzuki had exported over 3,000 Ravi pickups to Bangladesh and Nepal, along with spare parts and accessories to Europe, Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia. He reaffirmed the company’s support for government export initiatives, stating, “We are actively exploring new markets and test marketing our products in multiple countries.”

He also highlighted Pak Suzuki’s pioneering role in developing the local vendor base in Pakistan. Over the last four decades, the company has nurtured more than 100 local parts suppliers and supported several of them through technical assistance and joint ventures. This has paved the way for the localization of high-tech parts, which are now being supplied to all other OEMs. He added, “Pak Suzuki procures approximately PKR 50 billion worth of local parts annually.”

The press conference was well-attended by numerous journalists who raised questions regarding vehicle quality and government policy. Mr. Kawamura clarified that the build quality of the Suzuki Alto in Pakistan is the same as the models manufactured in Japan. He addressed the common misperception regarding its lightweight structure, explaining that lighter cars are intentionally designed to improve fuel efficiency while still incorporating essential safety features. Responding to concerns about policy, Mr. Kawamura highlighted the contradiction in government expectations—on one hand, urging manufacturers to increase exports, and on the other, imposing a steep 45% tax on each vehicle invoice, which hampers competitiveness in international markets.
