01 / The big picture
Start with the word “import.”
Imagine a walk from international food displays to robotics demonstrations, with a new business conversation waiting at each stop.
That is the appeal of the China International Import Expo. Its central purpose is to connect overseas goods and services with the Chinese market. The ninth edition runs in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, 2026. Event overview
The more interesting story is what happens around the products: a supplier meets a potential distributor, a brand hears a buyer’s questions, or two companies begin discussing a shared project. Xinhua’s latest coverage describes businesses using the expo to connect product launches with longer-term partnerships. Products becoming partnerships
The opportunity begins with an introduction. The value grows through what follows.
This feature interprets published coverage. The practical takeaways are editorial analysis, and the tour does not claim first-hand attendance.
02 / Find your reason to care
Who is CIIE for?
Its strongest commercial fit is for overseas companies exploring China and Chinese organisations sourcing internationally. There are useful perspectives for a much wider audience, too.
Overseas exporters & manufacturers
Meet potential Chinese buyers, explore distribution and test whether an offer fits local demand.
Chinese importers, retailers & distributors
Compare overseas offerings and open sourcing conversations with prospective suppliers.
SMEs, founders & startups
Look for partners, useful feedback and a realistic route from demonstration to a pilot project.
Technology, healthcare & mobility professionals
Explore specialist products and ask detailed questions about applications and partnerships.
Investors, researchers & trade organisations
Study emerging sectors and connect commercial ideas with potential collaborators.
Visitors, students & curious readers
Discover products and cultures, and understand how global trade connects to everyday life.
International importers can also learn from the products and potential partners they encounter. Their route to business may differ from the expo’s primary focus on imports into China. A good first step is to decide which side of the conversation you are on: selling, buying, collaborating or learning.

01 / EXPLOREFood & agriculture
A world of flavours, and a market to understand.
Food brands can explore how products, packaging and tastes translate to a new audience. For buyers, the practical questions are supply capacity, shelf life and distribution. Xinhua’s November 7 gallery shows fruit displays and food tastings.

02 / EXPLOREIndustry & technology
A closer look at what the next factory could do.
Robot table tennis makes an eye-catching demonstration. The business questions are broader: could automation improve a real workflow, and who can support it? Use demonstrations to start a technical conversation, then ask for evidence beyond the show floor.

03 / EXPLOREConsumer goods
Where everyday products meet new expectations.
For retailers and brands, this is a chance to study product presentation, design and positioning. Smaller companies can use the same lens: what makes a product distinctive, who would buy it, and which retail channel fits?

04 / EXPLOREAutomobiles & smart mobility
The journey is becoming part of the innovation.
The Cybercab is one of the reported attractions. For automotive businesses, the useful conversation concerns the wider ecosystem: components, materials and technology partnerships. A concept on display is a starting point for questions about readiness and real-world use.

05 / EXPLOREMedical equipment & healthcare
A meeting point for procurement and research.
Healthcare suppliers, distributors and institutional buyers can use the exhibition to compare offerings and begin specialist discussions. Ask about intended use, local approval status, training and service support when assessing a product for a particular market.
Related reporting
06 / EXPLORETrade in services
The expertise that helps products cross borders.
Business opportunities also depend on the work around a product. Service providers and prospective clients can discuss the support needed to enter a market and operate there. Arrive with a clear project brief and questions about scope, delivery and cost.
Related reporting04 / From attention to action
How can it be beneficial?
The expo creates a setting for discovery and introductions. For a business, the benefits depend on how well those conversations connect to a clear need.
Understand a new market.
A conversation can reveal what a buyer needs before you commit to a wider launch. Ask about positioning, packaging, pricing and channels. A Thai chamber representative interviewed by Xinhua describes the expo as a place for smaller firms to test products and business models. SMEs and market feedback
Find the right partner.
A promising contact might become a buyer, distributor or collaborator. The organiser’s online matchmaking platform allows registered professional visitors to post procurement and investment needs and view exhibitor information. That provides a useful starting point for a targeted conversation. Official matchmaking notice
Make innovation easier to evaluate.
Seeing a demonstration helps turn an abstract idea into specific questions. Xinhua reports partnerships extending into joint research and technology validation. For your own business, ask what a solution could change, what evidence supports it and what a trial would involve. Innovation and collaboration
Build a clearer story for your product.
Product launches give brands a reason to explain what is new and why it matters. Xinhua’s November 7 report highlights companies using CIIE to introduce products and strengthen industry relationships. For a smaller exhibitor, a concise explanation and a useful demonstration can make follow-up easier. Launches and industry relationships
A realistic measure of success: useful feedback, a qualified introduction or an agreed next meeting can all be meaningful outcomes. Sales, investment and lasting partnerships depend on further work; participation alone does not establish them.
05 / Beyond the booths
New ideas. Wider connections.

A place for emerging ideas
The innovation incubation section gives emerging projects a dedicated presence alongside the wider exhibition. Founders can use that setting to ask a practical question: who would find this useful enough to help develop or adopt it? Innovation section overview

The Hongqiao International Economic Forum adds a wider perspective. An Export-to-China Capacity Development Report launched there examines demand and the potential for countries to expand exports to China. The forum’s export-to-China report

Country pavilions add another dimension to the visit, connecting products with places and cultures. Xinhua’s China Pavilion coverage includes technology demonstrations and cultural displays. For general readers, these scenes make the expo a window into ideas as well as trade. Inside the China Pavilion
06 / Before making plans
What visitors need to know.
Information checked for November 8, 2026. The published registration deadline was October 20, with payment due October 23, Beijing time. Those deadlines have passed. The guidance requires advance registration and says regular on-site registration is unavailable. Confirm your existing approval and badge arrangements through the official channels.
Overseas professional visitors: the official FAQ lists visiting dates of November 6–10. Admission depends on approval, payment and an issued certificate; submitting an application alone does not grant access. Official professional visitor rules
Individual visitors: Shanghai’s published guidance lists November 8, 9 or 10, subject to quotas and advance approval, for applicants aged 14 and above. This channel also had October registration and payment deadlines. It should not be read as an invitation to buy a walk-in ticket today. Individual visitor guidance

07 / Turn interest into a next step
Make the opportunity useful.
- Choose one objective. Decide whether you want a customer, supplier, collaborator or a better understanding of the market.
- Research a short list. Look for a few companies whose products and capabilities match that objective.
- Prepare a clear introduction. Explain what you offer or need, who it serves and what kind of partnership you are seeking.
- Ask for specifics. Discuss capacity, delivery, support and what would be required for a small first project.
- Follow up with a proposal. Send a concise recap and agree on a concrete next step, such as a technical meeting or sample review.
CIIE’s appeal is its combination of global discovery and commercial focus. A visitor may leave with a new idea. A business may leave with a better question and the right person to ask. Both can be valuable starting points.
The checklist is editorial guidance based on the event’s business format.

Welcome to our explainer on CIIE 2026, the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai. It runs from November 5 to 10. 00:30–01:00 / The big idea · products and partnerships
The key word is import. Overseas businesses come to introduce goods and services to the Chinese market. Xinhua reports more than 480 exhibits making their global, Asian or China debut this year. The appeal goes beyond a launch: companies can look for distribution partners, learn what buyers want and start conversations that continue after the event.

01:00–01:35 / A quick tour · six sectors
The exhibition covers food and agriculture, consumer goods, industry and information technology, automobiles and smart mobility, healthcare, and trade in services. There is also a dedicated innovation incubation section. Think of it as several business conversations in one place. A food producer might be asking about distribution. A manufacturer might be comparing automation. A service provider might be helping a company plan its next market.

01:35–02:05 / Innovation · robotics and mobility
Some demonstrations are especially memorable. Xinhua’s coverage includes a robot playing table tennis and a Tesla Cybercab on display. These scenes make the future feel tangible. But a useful visit goes a step further: what problem does a technology solve, how ready is it, and who can help apply it? Those questions turn an interesting demonstration into a practical discussion.

02:05–02:35 / Who benefits · large and small businesses
This is relevant to established companies and smaller businesses alike. In Xinhua’s interview with a Thai chamber representative, the emphasis is on finding customers, testing ideas and developing sales channels. For an SME, the first valuable result could be buyer feedback or a promising introduction. An exporter wants market access; a Chinese buyer wants the right supplier. Their next steps should reflect those different goals.

02:35–03:00 / Startups and wider connections
For a startup, the useful question is who could become a customer, collaborator or pilot partner. Beyond the business booths, the country pavilions add a cultural dimension. The Hongqiao Forum also brings discussion of trade and demand into the picture. Together, these parts of the expo offer different ways to understand the market, from a product demonstration to a bigger economic conversation.

03:00–03:30 / Visitor information · dated November 8
If you are following the event on November 8, remember that the announced October registration deadlines have already passed. The published guidance requires advance registration and does not offer regular on-site sign-up. Existing approved visitors should check their badge and permitted dates. Everyone else can follow the coverage and use what they learn to prepare better questions for a future edition.

03:30–04:00 / Closing · make the visit count
The best way to judge an expo is by what you learn and what happens next. Choose the companies you want to understand, prepare a short explanation of your own needs, and follow up with a specific proposal. CIIE can create introductions and insight. Turning those into lasting business depends on product fit, preparation and continued work. Which sector would you explore first?
