It’s been a year now New Zeeland economy in a tough spot. Inflation is sky-high, everyday essentials are getting expensive. GDP’s dropped, taking a hit. Also house values are soaring  and Kiwis along with immigrants moving to Australia to cope up with the cost of living. Sounds like Kiwis are feeling a pinch.
NewZeeland is a mountainous, relatively small country. It is located in the South Pacific Ocean, 2000 km Southeast of Australia. It is roughly 269000 sq km about almost three-fourth size of Japan,  with a population of just little over 4 million. Major problem currently they are facing is of aging population.
NewZeelands Economy has been struggling after a  2024 recession, with global events like the Middle East escalations impacting it largely. Rising oil prices are fueling inflation, weakening and hitting the labor market. However, there is a silver lining, the South Island and rural areas are performing relatively better due to strong primary production . On the contrary the Urban areas such as Auckland and Wellington are struggling hard.
Meanwhile,  locals continue to migrate to Australia.
The labor market started showing drawbacks due to migration. Another reason is aging demographics, changing work preferences and more.
This has resulted in the shortfall of labor workforce. Job vacancies exist but existing labour interested trying jobs elsewhere where wages are better.
There is a growing high urgent demand for skilled labor in the country, specially in the education and health sectors…driven by aging population, burnout, and tech advancments..these sectors are starving for skilled labor.
The health sector facing severe shortages under the titles : nursing, pharmacists, technicians , and specialised care takers.
These are in super high demand due to increase in aging population.
Key shortages in the health sector include nurses,  midwives and Allied health.  Specialists are in high demand,  such as psychiatrists,  anaesthetist, oncologist, and ER specialists.
In the education sector secondary/ early childhood teachers , mainly in rural areas, are urgently required. Also in science and technology,  engineering and mathematics subjects ( STEM ). All the above vacancies are perticularly in rural areas.
However, New Zeeland is hiring skilled labor and gaps to boost it’s Economy. To make it workable and easy it has changed it’s Skilled Migrant Category ( SMC) , Resident Visa, aiming  to attract top tallant and to retain skilled workforce.
Perhaps, major aim to drive long-term economic growth in order to be competitive globally.
Hence, trying to address the skill shortages in key sectors like healthcare, education , IT, construction  as well as primary industries. Thus believe the skilled workers fill the gaps in critical industries. It will ensure continuity in growth.
It is noteworthy that the demand as projected in reports will contiue as part of the need for highly skilled professionals, vacancies stand available.
