It was the 40th Hijri year, day 19th of Ramzaan ul mubarak when Maula Ali (as) was in masjid e Kufa for Fajr prayers.
For anyone, I repeat anyone not only it’s difficult but impossible to harm him normally. Therefore, maloun Ibn Muljim enter the masjid with a poisoned sword hiding under his shirt.
He waited for Maula Ali (as) to bow down for sajood. Once in Sajood. Ibn Muljim stepped forward and struck on the head of Hazrat Imam Ali ( as ) with his poisoned sword, in masjid e Kufa.
Laanat beshumar us maloun per the three days and nights of Ramazan ul mubarak are the mourning days starting from the night of 19th Ramazan till 21st Ramazan. The Lion of God, fought bravely, however, succumbed to his severe wounds on 21st Ramazan ul mubarak, leaving behind his legacy of courage.
Hazrat Imam Ali (as), made his last will to his sons, Hazrat Imam Hasan (as) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (as).
The will focuses on fearing Allah, maintaining piety, organising affairs, avoiding worldly seduction, caring for orphans and supporting neighbours.
He addressed them saying, “My dear sons, my health is deteriorating, and I see the decay in health bringing my time near. I feel that I want to share my experience and knowledge with you my sons, alongside my near ones, in order to prepare you for life’s realities. I want you to see the world as I found it. My advice to look at the realities as I looked at them. Look at the world as I did and act upon the truth I have shown to you. Importantly do the right thing at the right place and at the right time.
Key Themes in the last will mainly focus upon; Consciousness of Allah (Taqwa) Fear Allah, remain obedient and not be attracted by worldly pleasures.
Unity and Relationships: Here, he urged his family to avoid disunity, remove differences if any and maintain good relationship. He quoted the prophet (pnuh) saying that reconciliation of differences is better than all prayers and fasting that one observe.
Support the Oppressed: He advised to be an enemy of the oppressor and the helper of the Oppressed without fear.
Care of Orphans: He stressed the need to fear Allah regarding orphans. Be sure that they are fed well and do not neglect their interests.
Rights of Neighbours: Another advice is to fear Allah in matters where Neighbours are concerned. Prophet (pbuh) instructed this very often, they even thought Neighbours might receive a share in inheritance.
Adherence to the Quran: Here emphasised to remain attached to the Quran and act upon it’s teachings.
Prayer (Salah): prayer is the pillar of the religion, Islam. It should be given top priority.
Jihad: He encouraged jihad that is striving in the way of Allah with property, lives and tongues.
Treatment of the Assassin: He ordered that in case he passed away, Ibn Muljim should be killed with a single blow in retaliation. Strictly forbidden disfiguring or mutilating the murderer’s body.
This Will was for his sons, his family and all believers in Islam.
As in his lectures scholar Haji Hasnain Rajabali often emphasises that this will is not merely historical document but a roadmap to maintain integrity.
The Last Will delivered to his sons, Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain (as), is a complete guide for spiritual, moral and social conduct. He urge them to follow his path, embracing the facts of life and Hereafter.
Is this not the appropriate time , that Muslim Ummah and our leaders get hold of , “Nahj al Balagha”, turn the pages and try to understand and maintain the guidelines addressed for us.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the strength to follow his teachings. Aameen Ya Rabbil Aalameen!
This will of Hazrat Imam Ali Ibn Abu Talib (as) is documented in detail in, “Nahj al Balagha”. It is considered a comprehensive testament.
