US Afghanistan War Commission Delegation Meets Field Marshal Asim Munir

RAWALPINDI: A delegation of the United States Afghanistan War Commission, led by its Co-Chairs Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr Colin F. Jackson, called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, at General Headquarters (GHQ) on Monday.
According to a news release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the delegation is conducting a review of the United States’ two-decade engagement in Afghanistan.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan’s support during the conflict, the prevailing regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan. Particular attention was given to perspectives relevant to the Commission’s ongoing review.
Field Marshal Asim Munir shared Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the prolonged conflict in Afghanistan and highlighted the challenges faced by Pakistan over the course of the war.
He stressed the importance of taking into account the wider regional perspective as well as Pakistan’s experience while assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the 20-year conflict.
The Army Chief emphasised that Pakistan’s experiences and the security challenges it confronted during the conflict remained important to developing a comprehensive understanding of the developments surrounding Afghanistan.
The US delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the conflict in Afghanistan and appreciated the country’s continued contribution towards regional peace and stability.
The interaction provided an opportunity for the Commission to hear Pakistan’s perspective as part of its broader review of the United States’ engagement in Afghanistan.
