2 Cops Martyred in Attack on Judges’ Security Squad

In a tragic incident, two policemen were martyred and two others injured when suspected militants ambushed the security squad of judges near the Bhagwal filling station on the Tank-Dera Ismail Khan Road on Friday.

Incident Details

The attack targeted the police squad assigned to protect judges serving in South Waziristan and Tank. According to reports:

  • Judges Involved:
    • Malik Asghar: Additional District and Sessions Judge, South Waziristan.
    • Malik Husnain: Additional District and Sessions Judge, Tank.
    • Mahjabeen: Senior Civil Judge.

The judges were returning to Dera Ismail Khan after their duties at the camp office in Tank when a group of 20 to 25 armed men opened fire on their security convoy.

  • Casualties:
    • Martyred: Abdul Samad and Abdullah.
    • Injured: Two unidentified policemen.

The attack resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire lasting almost 30 minutes, during which the judges remained unharmed.

Attackers’ Actions

  • The militants managed to flee the scene after the skirmish.
  • They also hijacked a police van, which they later set on fire in Cheena village, Tank.

Response and Investigation

A heavy contingent of police arrived at the location following the incident.

Judicial Response

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) took immediate action in response to the attack:

  • Summons: The provincial police chief and additional chief secretary Home were summoned for a meeting on Monday to discuss upgraded security for judicial officials.
  • Emergency Meeting: PHC Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim convened an emergency meeting attended by:
    • Justice Ijaz Anwar
    • Justice SM Attique Shah
    • Justice Shakil Ahmad
    • Justice Syed Arshad Ali
    • Registrar Ikhtiar Khan
    • Additional Registrar Administration Mumrez Khan Khalil

The meeting underscored the necessity of enhanced security measures for judicial officials, particularly in the merged districts. It was emphasized that there would be no compromise on their security and any negligence in this regard would not be tolerated.
