5th February Kashmir Solidarity Day

Since 1990 every year the people of Pakistan and Kashmir around the world commemorate 5th February as Kashmir Solidarity Day. This day is observed to express our unwavering political, moral and diplomatic support to the just struggle of our Kashmiri brethren for their right of self-determination, as enshrined in the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions. On this day we reiterate our persistent support and send a loud and clear message to the world that Kashmiris are not alone in their struggle against the occupying forces.
The indigenous struggle for the freedom of Kashmir Started in December 1989. The overwhelming response of the people of Kashmir in favor of this movement posed serious threats to the Indian government which converted the held valley into military cantonment with heavy deployment to crush the Kashmiris struggle for freedom.
In February 1990 Jamaat-e-Islami announced 5th February as Kashmir Solidarity Day, to express the solidarity with our Kashmiri brothren, the then Chief Minister of Punjab Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto also supported the call. Federal Government of People’s Party declared 5th February as official holiday, Kashmir Day has since been officially and publicly observed every year.
This day focuses on showing Pakistan’s support and unity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir, their ongoing freedom struggle, and to pay homage to Kashmiri martyrs who lost their lives fighting for Kashmir’s freedom.
Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed by people not only in Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) but also in other part of the world especiallyin Europe. The day is marked by public processions, special prayers in mosques for the liberation of Kashmir and protests that are carried out against the Indian occupation of Kashmir.
Rallies, marches, conferences and seminars are organized to support the Kashmiri freedom struggle and to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people. Another common feature is the formation of a human chain on all major routes leading to Azad Kashmir from Pakistan. This human chain symbolizes unity and solidarity to reassure Kashmiris that they are not alone in their heroic struggle for their inalienable right to self-determination. The people of Jammu and Kashmir were promised this right 77 years ago by the international community but India has continued to deny them their inalienable right by refusing to implement UN Security Council resolutions (UNSCR47) on Kashmir.
Since the start of their struggle for freedom the valiant people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir have rendered unmatched sacrifices in their just struggle. More than 100,000 Kashmiris have been martyred. Use of pellet gun, rape as weapon, human shield all the Indian brutalities and atrocities have failed to deter the people of Indian Occupied Kashmir from their cause for freedom from Indian oppression. The people of Pakistan and freedom-loving people across the world salute them for their courage, bravery and persistence in facing the worst kind of human rights abuses, violence and suppression by the Indian security forces.
Pakistan is committed to a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute based on UN resolutions. Pakistan reminds the international community of its responsibilities in the matter and urges it to fulfill its promise made with the people of Jammu and Kashmir 77 years ago. Peace in the region will remain elusive until the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
