ISLAMABAD: Shakeel Anjum who earlier served a termed as President and Secretary of the National Press Club representing the Journalist Panel has been elected President of the NPC with a thumping majority bagging 1001 votes while the closest rival and the outing President Shakeel Ahmed Qarar (Azad Group) who could manage only 685 votes. The other five candidates could not manage mentionable votes.
The results for the main Executive Body were announced by the Chairman Election Committee Asim Qadeer Rana, at 8.00 a.m. Tuesday. The results for the Governing Body seats are expected to be announced today or tomorrow. No untoward incident was reported on the election day i.e. Monday and more than 2000 Council Members participated in the voting that continued from 8.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Similarly, Anwar Raza of the Journalist Panel retained his seat as Secretary of the NPC bagging 1108 votes and his closest rival Zaghum Naqvi could manage only 644 votes. The rest of the five candidates could not manage even the one hundred mark on this seat.
Similarly, on the three seats of Vice-President (for men) Anwar Waheed Chaudhry (994 votes), Khalil Ahmed Raja (824 votes) and Shah Muhammad (711 votes) of the Journalist Panel were declared elected. Although total contestants on these seats were 20 but those who could manage more than 500 votes are: Qurban Ali Shah (589 votes), and Salman Qazi (535 votes).
On the seat for Vice-President (women seat) interesting one-to-one battle was witnessed in which Dr. Sadia Kamal of Azad Panel secured 959 votes to defeat her only rival from Journalist Panel Shazia Nayyer who put up a tough fight securing 813 votes.
Ehtisham ul Haq (953 votes), Noshad Abbasi (942 votes) and Muhammad Nadeem Chaudhry (892 votes) from the Journalist Panel were declared elected on the three seats of Joint Secretary reserved for men. A total number of 16 candidates contested on these seats but two others Ayaz Akbar Yousafzai (616 votes) and Akram Abid Qureshi (522 votes) could secure more than five hundred votes. Amongst them Ehtisham ul Haq will be considered as the Senior Vice-President and is likely to take over the charge of the Camp Office of the National Press Club in Rawalpindi as per previous practice.
Shakila Jalil from the Journalist Panel retained her seat of Joint Secretary (women) by securing 817 votes. The other two contestants Mahwish Fakhar and Fauzia Kalsoom Rana could manage 545 and 512 votes, respectively.
Meanwhile, Sagheer Ahmed Chaudhry also retained the seat of Finance Secretary (836 votes) defeating seven rivals the closes rival of them Khawar Nawaz Raja who could manage 691 votes
