KARACHI: Work is under way on a war footing to eradicate polio, Prof. Dr. Farhan Essa Abdullah, Rotary District Governor inaugurated free medical and polio camp organized by Rotary Club of Karachi Capital Hills, Rotary International District, in connection with the ongoing anti-polio campaign in the country, says a Press release.
This camp was organized in the under resourced area of Umer Colony with the support of Rotary National Polio Plus Chair Aziz Memon, District East Medical Department and local people. At this occasion a proper Polio Campaign has started, in addition to awareness session, story-telling, vaccination, patients were examined, and free medicines were distributed.
Speaking at the occasion, District Governor Rotary International Prof. Dr. Farhan Essa Abdullah said that work was being done on a war footing to eradicate polio from the country. The polio virus attacks the nervous system and weakens the muscles of the legs and other parts of the body, and can sometimes be fatal, he said. The virus mostly affects children under the age of five who have not been vaccinated against polio. The virus is most likely to have an effect on children.
Lubna Panjwani, Charter President, Rotary Club of Karachi Capital Hills, said that the camp was organized in connection with the ongoing campaign against polio and the presence of a large number of mothers and children has proved that people are awakening. She thanked the security department and all friends from print and electronic media for their presence and joining the noble cause.
Club Polio Chair Shahid Khamisa said he was grateful for the co-operation of the locals and that it would continue on a permanent basis until polio was eradicated.
Membership Chair, Mansoor Naz thanked the Health Department for its cooperation. On the occasion, Deputy Director Health Dr. Anila and Additional Director Dr. Zahoor among others from the concerned departments visited the camp and appreciated the efforts of Rotary Club of Karachi Capital Hills.
Medicines, pencils, juices, story books, whistleblowers, T-shirts, stickers and badges were distributed free of cost. The Polio Campaign organizing committee also included General Secretary, Erum Khan, Uroosa Aziz, Syed Ajaz Ali, Fazal-e-Rabbi, Seema Zahid, Saddam Tufail Hashmi, Dr. Atif Mansoor.
