Education Crisis in Gaza

As of July 30, all 625,000 enrolled students in the Gaza Strip have missed a full academic year, according to the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) and Save the Children. Among them, 39,000 students missed the 12th grade official exams (tawjihi) for the first time in decades, preventing their transition to higher education. Many may never return to school due to the ongoing conflict.

Casualties and Damage

Israeli forces have killed at least 9,211 students and 397 educational staff members and wounded over 14,237 students and 2,246 teachers since October 7.

Protests and Solidarity Movements

Massive rallies in Morocco and Jordan mourned the late Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh and showed solidarity with Palestinians. Protesters in Rabat and Amman condemned Israeli actions and called for an end to normalization with Israel.

Israeli Airstrikes

An Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City school sheltering displaced persons killed at least 15 Palestinians. In the West Bank, two airstrikes killed nine people, including a local Hamas commander. The Israeli military stated the targets were fighter cells planning attacks.

Paris Protests

Protesters in Paris showed solidarity with Palestine during an Olympic cycling competition, displaying Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine.” French gendarmes monitored the protest, which coincided with demonstrations demanding an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Palestinian Detainees

Approximately 9,900 Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons, including 3,432 administrative detainees, 250 children, and 86 women. The report from Palestinian prisoner affairs organizations noted the number of detainees and highlighted the use of administrative detention, which allows imprisonment without charge.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with significant loss of life, disruption of education, and widespread displacement. International protests continue to highlight solidarity with Palestinians and condemn the ongoing conflict.
