Nine Dead, 26 Injured in Tragic Bus Accident Near Ankara, Turkey

A devastating bus accident on Friday claimed the lives of nine people when a passenger bus veered off a highway and collided with an overpass pillar near Polatli, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Ankara. The bus was traveling from Izmir to Agri when the tragic incident occurred.

Governor Vasip Sahin, in an interview with HaberTurk, confirmed that at least 26 other passengers sustained injuries in the crash. The cause of the accident is under investigation, with a deputy chief prosecutor appointed to lead the inquiry. Initial assessments indicate that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, as no skid marks were found at the crash site, suggesting a lack of any attempt to brake.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, transporting the injured to hospitals in Polatli and Ankara. The severity of their injuries remains unclear at this time. Images from the site show the bus’s front end crushed against the overpass pillar, with personal belongings scattered across the wreckage, highlighting the force of the impact. The accident also resulted in the closure of one side of the highway, causing significant disruption to traffic in the area.
