Man Cleared of Cybercrime Charges Linked to UK Riot Misinformation

A court on Monday acquitted Farhan Asif, a local man charged with cybercrime offences related to the spread of false information online that allegedly fueled riots in the UK. The riots erupted after misinformation circulated online, falsely accusing an Islamist migrant of killing three young girls in a knife attack in the northern English town of Southport in late July.

Farhan Asif, who operated a web publication, was arrested in Lahore by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and charged last week. His lawyer, Rana Rizwan Akhtar, stated that the investigation could not establish any evidence linking Asif to any illegal activities. Consequently, the court acquitted him after the agency submitted its findings.

Asif had cooperated with the investigation by providing access to all his social media accounts and devices. He had been accused of posting an article on his X social media account that falsely claimed the attacker was a Muslim immigrant and also shared graphic images related to the incident. However, the court’s ruling cleared him of all charges.
