The United States military reported that 15 ISIL (ISIS) fighters were killed in a joint operation with Iraqi security forces in western Iraq. The raid, which took place on Thursday, left seven US soldiers injured, as confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM) in a statement on Saturday.
During the operation, the fighters were heavily armed with weapons, grenades, and explosive suicide belts. CENTCOM confirmed that no civilian casualties were reported.
Five US soldiers sustained injuries during the operation, while two others were hurt in accidental falls. All injured personnel are currently in stable condition.
CENTCOM emphasized that ISIS remains a significant threat to the region, as well as to US allies and the homeland, and that the US will continue to aggressively target these terrorists alongside its coalition and Iraqi partners.
Iraq’s military stated that the operation included air strikes on ISIL hideouts, followed by an airborne assault. The operation resulted in the deaths of key ISIL leaders, the destruction of weapons and logistical support, and the safe detonation of explosive belts. Important documents, identification papers, and communication devices were also seized.
This operation is part of ongoing efforts by the US-led coalition, which remains stationed in Iraq and Syria to counter ISIL. Despite the official end date for the coalition’s mission being postponed, the coalition continues to combat ISIL fighters who, despite losing control of territory, remain active in remote areas and continue to carry out attacks.
