Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk is set to visit Islamabad for a two-day official trip from September 18 to 19, according to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office. Overchuk will lead a high-level delegation and is scheduled to meet key figures, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
The visit is viewed as significant, especially as both countries have been in talks regarding potential Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) transactions for the future. Russia has indicated that its LNG export terminals will be ready by 2026, which coincides with the reopening of the price clause under Pakistan’s existing long-term agreements with Qatar.
Beyond energy, the visit could also focus on reviving Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), a project originally established with Moscow’s assistance. Russian officials have previously expressed interest in helping Pakistan upgrade or establish new steel mills.
This visit is one of many high-level international interactions Pakistan has had recently, highlighting its efforts to bolster diplomatic and economic relations with key global partners.
