Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 23 to 27, where he will address key global issues, including Kashmir, Palestine, and the rising trend of Islamophobia. The Foreign Office confirmed that PM Shehbaz’s speech on September 27 will emphasize these long-standing concerns on the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) agenda.
The Prime Minister, who reached London on Saturday and will depart for New York on Monday, shared his objectives on social media, stating: “We will present Pakistan’s perspective to the world.” During his UNGA address, PM Shehbaz is expected to reiterate Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and reforms in international economic relations.
Although Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was initially scheduled to accompany the premier, his trip was cancelled to focus on preparations for Pakistan’s upcoming diplomatic engagements, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s meeting.
In addition to his speech, PM Shehbaz will attend high-level meetings, including those on the existential threat posed by sea-level rise and the UNSC’s debate on “Leadership for Peace.” He will also hold bilateral talks with world leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and UNGA President, and advocate for decisive global action on climate change and Islamophobia.
