A Year into Relentless War, Gazans Continue to Be Forcibly Displaced: UNRWA

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reporting that the situation has become increasingly dire as the war enters its second year. Since the escalation of violence in October 2023, the scale of forced displacement has been unprecedented. Over 2.2 million Gazans, many of whom are already refugees, continue to endure mass displacements due to continuous aerial bombardments and military operations.

The initial wave of forced evacuations started when Israel ordered civilians north of the Wadi Gaza to relocate southward, under conditions that failed to ensure basic human rights such as safety, shelter, and access to food and healthcare. UN officials have condemned this as a potential war crime, highlighting the inadequacy of provisions made for the displaced population. Currently, more than 90% of the population is facing acute food insecurity, with the risk of famine looming.

UNRWA has been a lifeline for many, providing emergency services such as food distribution, psychological support, and hygiene kits. However, the agency has stressed that much more aid is needed, as it struggles to meet the growing needs of displaced families. The destruction of civilian infrastructure, lack of essential supplies, and ongoing hostilities have severely hampered relief efforts. Many displaced Gazans are unable to return home due to the widespread presence of unexploded ordnance and the sheer level of destruction across the Strip.

The international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and the protection of civilians. However, with no end in sight to the hostilities, the prospects for Gaza’s displaced population remain grim, as they face an uncertain future under the shadow of continued violence.
