A case of attempted murder has been registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur following the death of a police constable during a protest in Islamabad. The case, filed at Islamabad’s Noon Police Station, includes serious charges such as attempted murder, arson, attacks on the state, and violence against police personnel, as well as offenses under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
The protest, which took place on October 4, was part of PTI’s ongoing demonstrations in Islamabad, during which Constable Abdul Hameed of Islamabad Capital Territory Police was allegedly attacked by PTI activists while performing his duty near Chungi Number 26 on GT Road. The policeman succumbed to his injuries two days later.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), PTI activists, acting on the instructions of leaders including Imran Khan and Gandapur, assaulted the police with sticks, stones, and iron rods. The FIR further claims that protestors also fired at the police, injured officers, and set government and public property on fire. The report detailed how the protestors tore police uniforms, used tear gas, and raised slogans against the government and the state.
In addition to Khan and Gandapur, prominent PTI figures such as Azam Swati, Omar Ayub, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, and others, along with 500 unidentified individuals, were also named in the case.
The situation in Islamabad remained tense as PTI protestors attempted to gather at D-Chowk despite the imposition of Section 144, which bans public gatherings. The protests, held in defiance of the law, sought to demand the release of Imran Khan from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where he has been incarcerated for over a year, as well as to advocate for judicial independence.
Clashes erupted between PTI supporters and law enforcement, with both sides accusing each other of initiating violence. Several PTI leaders, including Imran Khan’s sisters Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, were detained during the demonstration and are currently in police custody. They face multiple charges, including terrorism-related offenses, as outlined in a separate case registered at Kohsar Police Station.
