A first-year nursing student at Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore has survived a suicide attempt and has accused the institution’s principal of harassment and abusive behavior. This incident comes just days after protests over alleged student rape reports shook the city.
The student, Iman Fatima from Gujranwala, studying at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, was reportedly rescued by fellow nurses on Sunday while attempting to harm herself. She has since called on Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take immediate action against the principal, accusing her of emotional abuse and character defamation.
According to Tahira Sagheer, Director General Nursing Punjab, the student’s suicide attempt followed what she described as mistreatment by the principal, who allegedly used derogatory language, harassed students, and resorted to character assassination. Iman reportedly requested leave from the principal, which further escalated the situation.
The student has officially submitted a complaint to the Secretary of Health, with a hearing scheduled to address the matter. Sagheer confirmed that the principal, the student, and eyewitnesses have all been summoned. “If the allegations are proven true, appropriate action will be taken,” she stated.
Iman Fatima has accused the principal of continuously harassing her for six months. “The principal treats every girl like this, including me,” she said, expressing her frustration over the college administration’s failure to notify her parents about her injuries or allow them to meet her. She claimed, “I took this step because of the principal’s humiliation and character assassination.”
This incident follows a period of unrest across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, where viral reports of a student’s alleged rape led to widespread protests. Over two dozen people, including four police officers, were injured during violent demonstrations last week. In response, CM Maryam Nawaz had announced a crackdown on those spreading fake news about the incident during a press briefing on October 16.
