Panel Comprising Mostly Ruling Alliance Members Meets Today to Pick CJP

Following the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, Parliament has initiated the process for nominating the new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) under Article 175A. A 12-member Special Parliamentary Committee, primarily consisting of ruling alliance members, has been formed to select the new CJP.

The committee includes members from major political parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), among others. Their first meeting is scheduled for today (October 22) at the Parliament House.

This committee is tasked with nominating the next CJP from among the three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court—Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Yahya Afridi. The nomination will be finalized and sent to the prime minister, who will forward it to the president for formal appointment.

The process is being expedited as the current CJP, Qazi Faez Isa, is set to retire on October 25.
