PTI Vows to Stand Against Any Further Constitutional Changes

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has pledged to resist any new constitutional amendments proposed by the government, expressing strong opposition during a recent parliamentary session by walking out as votes were cast on the contentious 26th Constitutional Amendment.

PTI leaders argued that the proposed amendment would grant undue control to parliament over the judiciary, potentially allowing political interference in judicial matters, particularly in the appointments of Supreme Court judges and the Chief Justice.

The latest PTI statement follows reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto discussed a possible “27th constitutional amendment.” PTI’s Sheikh Waqas Akram, speaking on Geo Pakistan, stated, “Whether it is the 27th or 28th amendment, PTI will oppose it.” He claimed that the government’s use of raids on PTI lawmakers and detentions of supporters showed its anxiety.

Akram further questioned why calls for consensus are only raised when PTI is involved, asserting, “We are a political party, and our decisions face criticism, but consensus should apply to all.”

Defending Bushra Bibi, he noted she has no interest in politics, emphasizing PTI’s commitment to keeping family members out of political matters. However, he confirmed PTI’s solidarity with family members advocating for their leader’s release, stating, “It’s not politics when family stands up for a loved one.”

Faisal Chaudhry’s Role in PTI Legal Team Clarified

Addressing reports about Faisal Chaudhry’s removal from PTI’s legal team, Akram clarified that Salman Akram Raja currently heads the legal committee. He emphasized his respect for Chaudhry, saying, “Faisal is like a brother to me; he hasn’t been hired for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s cases.”

In a separate interview, Chaudhry confirmed he had filed a petition on PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s directive, adding, “If I’m delivering, I’ll stay. If not, my client can choose another lawyer.”
