In a major austerity move, the federal government has eliminated 6,770 positions across various federal ministries, divisions, and departments as part of a right-sizing policy. This measure, approved by the federal cabinet on August 27, 2024, is aimed at streamlining administrative structures and cutting down excess expenditure. The policy affects positions from Grade-1 to Grade-22, with 4,816 posts abolished and 1,954 marked as “dying” or gradually being phased out.
According to official documentation, the breakdown of abolished posts includes high-ranking positions, such as two of Grade-22 and 22 of Grade-20, along with various other grades, ranging from 957 posts of Grade-1 to 270 of Grade-17 and 69 of Grade-19. Among the posts, 4,360 are non-gazetted, while 456 are gazetted.
Furthermore, the posts labeled as dying include a significant number of lower grades, such as 578 posts of Grade-1 and 235 posts of Grade-4. Ministries and divisions have been directed by the Establishment Division to enforce the cabinet’s decision, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to efficient governance and resource optimization.
