Pakistan’s Polio Cases Reach 45 as Two New Infections Detected

Pakistan’s total number of polio cases for the year has climbed to 45 with the detection of two new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1). According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH), the latest cases include a young girl from Lakki Marwat and a boy from DI Khan, both confirmed on Friday.

Health officials at NIH reported that genetic sequencing of the virus samples collected from the children is underway to track the transmission patterns. This marks the second case in 2024 from each of these districts, where environmental surveillance had already identified WPV1, indicating a continued high risk of virus transmission in these areas.

To date, the distribution of the 45 polio cases across Pakistan includes 22 cases in Balochistan, 12 in Sindh, nine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one case each in Punjab and Islamabad. Health authorities are actively tracing contacts and monitoring potential areas of spread as part of their ongoing efforts to control the virus.
