Lahore Tops Global Pollution Charts Amid Persistent Smog

Lahore reclaimed its position as the most polluted city globally on Friday, with air quality levels deteriorating once again. After brief improvement, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to 502 in the morning and remained hazardous at 485 by 9:30 pm, as per IQAir. PM2.5 levels were recorded over 63 times higher than WHO’s safe limit.

Punjab’s government had eased restrictions Thursday following slight relief from smog, resuming outdoor activities. However, pollution quickly worsened, with Multan (AQI 354) and Faisalabad also experiencing hazardous conditions.

The smog, attributed to emissions, dust, and illegal stubble burning from India, prompted earlier school closures and bans on outdoor activities. Environmental Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had termed the crisis a “national disaster.”

Experts warn prolonged exposure to toxic air risks severe health issues, including heart disease, strokes, and lung cancer.
