Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), has strongly denounced the violent incidents that took place in Islamabad on Tuesday, urging for a peaceful resolution to the political unrest.
Speaking to the media, Rehman stressed the need for open dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing the February 8 elections as a key factor in the current political instability. Despite the government’s efforts to prevent it, PTI workers managed to reach Islamabad, where violent clashes ensued. Rehman condemned the violence, calling for restraint and emphasizing that mature leadership should guide their followers to avoid such conflicts.
The JUI-F leader recalled the peaceful gatherings during the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) protests and the Azadi March, where over 1.5 million people gathered in Islamabad without violence. He called for more inclusive politics and warned against the government’s coercive approach toward political leadership, which he argued would only exacerbate the country’s turmoil.
Rehman also highlighted the importance of consensus-building on national issues, specifically mentioning the Kachi Canal project, which he believes should be addressed through consultations and mutual agreements with all provinces to ensure that everyone’s interests are considered.
Reflecting on the broader political landscape, Rehman criticized the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan for their failure to effectively address unrest in those regions. He warned that if the government continued its focus on imprisoning and re-arresting political leaders, it could lead to further chaos and anarchy.
The JUI-F leader also expressed concerns about PTI’s intentions after announcing their plan to march toward D-Chowk, prompting the government to impose strict security measures. Despite these efforts, PTI was able to reach Islamabad, where violence broke out. Rehman condemned these acts of violence and reiterated his call for peaceful political engagement.
In response to questions about the religious seminaries draft discussed during the PDM era, Rehman noted that the proposal was created after extensive consultations with key political figures, including Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto, and Nawaz Sharif. He expressed concerns over the objections to the draft and promised to engage in further discussions on the matter.
Finally, Rehman attributed the ongoing political turmoil to the February 8 elections and once again advised PTI to refrain from supporting the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
