TORONTO: Renowned Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has praised Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh for his rendition of Sanson Ki Mala Pe, describing the performance as a heartfelt tribute to legendary qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Rahat, who is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s nephew, made the remarks following his concert in Toronto on Sunday, saying that performing songs associated with the qawwali maestro can be challenging even for accomplished artists.
“It would be very appropriate to say that even big artists get nervous while performing Khan Sahab’s song, but Diljit has done full justice to the best of his ability, with his heart,” Rahat said.
Diljit performed Sanson Ki Mala Pe during his Aura World Tour, paying tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and drawing appreciation from fans for honouring the late singer’s musical legacy.
Responding to the positive reaction, Diljit later spoke about the experience during a social media live session on September 14.
“Nusrat Sahab was a great artist, and singing his song was not easy for anyone. I wanted to try and pay tribute to him; he was a legend,” Dosanjh said.
His performance highlighted the enduring influence of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whose qawwali and Sufi music earned him international recognition and continues to inspire performers across South Asia and beyond.
Diljit has also previously attracted attention for cross-border cultural collaborations. During a concert in London, he shared the stage with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir.
The two later appeared together in Sardaar Ji 3, marking another prominent collaboration between artists from India and Pakistan in Punjabi entertainment.
Rahat’s appreciation of Diljit’s performance has further drawn attention to the musical connection between contemporary Punjabi performers and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s enduring legacy.
