Adam Goldberg Critiques Friends for Lack of Diversity and Realism

Adam Goldberg, who portrayed Eddie, Chandler Bing’s eccentric roommate for a short stint in *Friends*, has called attention to some major flaws in the beloved 90s sitcom. In a recent interview with *The Independent*, Goldberg highlighted the unrealistic portrayal of New York City life, particularly noting the spacious apartment that the main characters inhabit, which seemed financially implausible for their situations. He remarked, “I’m not even 100 per cent sure I knew it took place in that city.”

Beyond this, Goldberg discussed the show’s lack of diversity, pointing out that the all-white cast and absence of characters of color were reflective of broader societal norms at the time. He acknowledged that many people of color, particularly Black viewers, likely felt unrepresented in the show. However, Goldberg noted that such exclusion wasn’t surprising given the larger cultural landscape of the 1990s, where mainstream television seldom showcased diverse casts.

Despite these critiques, Goldberg remains grateful for his role in the series and its lasting impact. He expressed joy at being part of the show’s legacy, despite his brief time on screen. Interestingly, *Friends* co-creator Marta Kauffman has echoed similar concerns in recent years, admitting in a 2022 interview with the *Los Angeles Times* that she regrets the show’s lack of diversity, a reality that has drawn increasing scrutiny as societal attitudes have shifted.
