Afghanistan Cricket Board Bans Ihsanullah Janat Over Corruption

Afghanistan’s cricket board has imposed a five-year ban on former international batter Ihsanullah Janat after he admitted to engaging in corrupt activities during a domestic league, as reported by AFP. The ban, effective immediately, follows breaches of the Anti-Corruption Codes of both the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Janat, 26, a promising player with three Test matches, 16 One-Day Internationals, and one Twenty20 International to his name, confessed to his involvement in match-fixing during the second edition of the Kabul Premier League 2024. The ACB’s statement revealed that Janat admitted to these charges and has been banned from all cricket-related activities.

In addition to Janat, three other unnamed players are under investigation for similar corrupt practices. Janat’s suspension comes as Afghanistan’s cricket team continues to make strides internationally, with notable victories over England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup and impressive performances in the Twenty20 World Cup.

Janat, who last played for the national team in 2022, scored 72 runs in four innings for the Shamshad Eagles in the Kabul League, which concluded with the team finishing in last place.
