Artificial Intelligence in education: Enhancing learning methods, not replacing teachers

It is only during the recent decades, since we started experiencing evolution and advancement of digital technologies.
Every new dawn witness something new.
Particularly in education things have indeed been advancing at an incredible pace with major transformation occurring in daily life. Youth as well as young children in primary school, of ages seven and plus using Tech Apps, for example, Chat GPT when doing assignments and homework, not using their minds. On a very serious note, concern showed by teachers. On the other side high school students also showed their conern that teachers deliver lectures word to word from Chat GPT. Modern teaching methods these days now try to blend ( AI ) tools such as Chat GPT with learning, but too much reliance on these tools means both teachers and students most of the time skip thinking process. Inclusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into daily has introduced a phenomenon, “use it or lose it “risk of human capabilities or skill decay.
Certainly it raises concerns regarding critical thinking skills at risk of becoming “rusted “, when not in use.
Calculators first then computers have been used since a long time now in the classrooms strange it is that students in exam room not allowed to use calculators but yes in the classrooms. Computer technology used by both students and teachers. Infect lectures in the classroom delivered with the help of Power point. Power point do not do justice for some subjects e.g those containing figures with curves drawn and diagrams.
In the west teachers in school rapidly implementing the (AI) tools. There are smart classrooms where AI tools are widely implemented. From calculaters to (AI), classrooms have evolved, but with the usage of advance technology raises strong concerns about creative thinking skills.
Also there are now diploma courses and degree Awarding online universities working successfully.
Even in Pakistan during Pandemic, Covid 19 time, online school classes for students, and for elders office going population Work from home (WFH) facilities, definitly have been a great advantage. Advance digital technologies, AI tools implementation made it possible.
During the pandemic in 2020 I interviewed school going children ages 5 to 15 years of age and compiled them in a book form.. One question was regarding online classes. Almost 90 percent didn’t like it. Online learning was tough for children who missed face to face teaching and learning, they are used to of eye contact with the teacher. Children learn faster with peers due to collaborative play and social modelling.
Previously, teachers try their best to transfer knowledge to students and assess their retention by asking questions, applied questions to high school students.
At present it seems as the role of teachers also being transformed. They mostly assist students and encourage to use modern technology. Role is now mostly to
guide children. Teachers now guide more than delivering lecture. At every level of education teachers are using tech apps.
Some use to save time as do not want to think while preparing lectures. Point is when can do in ten minutes why spend an hour? Whatever, technology will continue evolve and the journey of tech advancement will not stop here. A research undertaken from RAND ( an acronym for research and development, help improve policy and decision making through research and analysis ) and the National Centre for Education Statistics
found that teachers spend approximately ten hours per week on lesson planning and other related tasks.
Now to save time, (AI) very conveniently help in generating draft lessons as well as if ask can suggest differentiated activities for students at different skills and IQ levels. These still require teachers review for appropriateness and insight. Research findings reveal that, the thinking, reflection and meaning, still belong to the teacher and the student.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered a game changer in the field of education as much as in other sectors of the economy.  It helps in boosting, improving personalised learning. With the assistance of (AI) it can also help in administrative tasks. Tech apps such as chat bots, there to support anytime. It is also persued for digital learning, grading, designing curriculum and research. Also often require anticipatory analytics to help improve student retention level.
With all the support one must learn to enhance learning by filling the gaps instead of replacing.
One most important aspect is it’s special feature for students with special needs. For the purpose (AI) has translation and speech to text modelities that help include the special need students in the learning process.
As mentioned (AI) benefit the teachers and education system in various ways for instance: save time efficiently, Student get lessons as per their skills and teachers try to promote learning more inclusively as and when need arises.
Besides all the favourable advantages one serious warning is: ensure the use of artificial intelligence for learning for saving time but not for cheating
To conclude , the vision of (AI), the ultimate objective in education is to supplement human capabilities and not replacing teachers and instructors.
