The recent arrest of former Prince Andrew, the younger brother of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, has caused a global stir. Andrew was considered one of the most prominent members of the British royal family and was regarded as Queen Elizabeth-II favorite son. He carried out official royal duties, received military honors, and served as United Kingdom’s Special Trade Representative.
On his 66th birthday February 19, 2026, British police arrested him from his residence. He was accused of illegally providing sensitive government documents related to trade and other matters to American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as Special Trade Representative. Police also searched his residences in Norfolk and Windsor. However, after 11 hours of interrogation, he was released. A photograph of him sitting in the back seat of a car with his head bowed as he left the police station went viral in global media, portraying him like a defeated man. According to British police, investigations against him in connection with his association with Jeffrey Epstein will continue.
Following his brother’s arrest, King Charles III responded by saying that the law must take its course and assured full cooperation with the police. For some time pressure had been mounting on the royal family over Prince Andrew’s ties with Epstein, though Andrew consistently denied the allegations. Last year, emails written by Andrew in 2011 surfaced, revealing that he had remained in continuous contact with Jeffrey Epstein. In 2019, a woman named Virginia Giuffre accused Andrew of sexual abuse. As public pressure intensified, Buckingham Palace in 2022 stripped him of all official military titles and royal duties, and he was removed from his royal patronages and official residence in Windsor.
Following his arrest, discussions are underway to legislate his removal from the line of succession, where he currently stands eighth. If the government succeeds in passing such legislation, Andrew’s position in the succession line will be terminated. In early October last year, Andrew relinquished his royal title “Duke of York.” Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying that Andrew had voluntarily decided not to use the title Duke of York or any other royal styles and honors granted to him by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. He also stepped down from the Order of the Garter, Britain’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry.
Since Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein became public, the British royal family has been facing what is described as its biggest crisis and most severe public backlash in 90 years. These allegations have not only damaged Prince Andrew’s personal reputation but have also plunged the royal family into a major crisis, posing a serious test for restoring its credibility and public trust.
It is worth recalling that after King Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936 and the tragic death of Lady Diana in 1997, Andrew’s arrest is being described as one of the most serious challenges faced by the royal family. Since ascending the throne in September 2022, King Charles has encountered one crisis after another. His younger son, Prince Harry, left royal duties after marriage and moved to the United States with his wife Meghan Markle. The publication of his memoir had already brought the royal family into intense public debate. Now, allegations against Andrew involving sexual exploitation of minors and the unlawful sharing of sensitive government documents with the notorious American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have further complicated matters.
In this context, Andrew’s arrest is being described as an extraordinary example of legal action against a British royal figure in 300 years, raising serious questions about the royal family’s credibility. However, an important aspect is that Britain has practically demonstrated that the rule of law applies equally to everyone, even a member of the royal family something that may be unimaginable in societies like Pakistan.
Andrew’s arrest has also put pressure on the Trump administration, as no action has been taken against American President Donald Trump, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and other prominent American personalities whose names appeared in the Epstein files. By arresting its own prince, Britain has shown that even royalty is not above the law. As a result, prominent individuals in the U.S. and other countries connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s network may also face accountability and possible arrests soon.
