Australia’s Matthew Wade Retires from International Cricket, Joins Coaching Staff

Matthew Wade, Australian wicketkeeper-batsman and a key contributor to Australia’s T20 World Cup victory in 2021, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday. The 36-year-old, who played in 36 Test matches and 189 limited-overs games over a 13-year career, will transition to a coaching role, specifically as wicketkeeping and fielding coach, for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan.

Reflecting on his career, Wade noted that retirement discussions had become a regular topic over recent years. He briefly captained Australia’s T20 team from 2020 to early 2024 and had hoped for a strong showing in the T20 World Cup earlier this year, which might have influenced his decision to continue. However, Australia’s early exit, along with personal reflections, led him to retire.

Cricket Australia’s CEO Nick Hockley praised Wade for his adaptability and contributions across formats, expressing enthusiasm for Wade’s new role in guiding emerging players. Wade will also continue to play domestically in the Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes, where he remains a popular figure.
