Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman: A Profile

General Waker-Uz-Zaman, recently appointed as Bangladesh’s army chief, has quickly become a central figure in the nation’s political landscape, announcing the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on Monday.

Zaman, 58, assumed the role of army chief on June 23, 2024, for a standard three-year tenure. Born in Dhaka in 1966, he is married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman, the daughter of General Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman, who served as army chief from 1997 to 2000.

General Zaman holds a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from the National University of Bangladesh and a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from King’s College, London. His extensive education and experience are highlighted on the Bangladesh Army’s official website.

Before his appointment as army chief, Zaman served as the Chief of General Staff for just over six months. In this role, he oversaw military operations, intelligence, Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, and the army’s budget. His career, spanning over three and a half decades, has seen him working closely with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, particularly in his role as the principal staff officer at the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Minister’s Office.

General Zaman is also noted for his efforts in the modernization of the army, a significant aspect of his career as documented by the Bangladesh Army. His leadership comes at a critical time for Bangladesh, as the nation navigates through political upheaval and the formation of a new interim government.
