Market close
The KSE-100 index closed at 166,409.25, down 784.19 points or -0.47% from the previous close of 167,193.44. The session ended with mixed stock-level action: Pakistan Oilfields Limited and Meezan Bank were among the day's leaders while several refiners and a major fertiliser company posted notable declines. The watchlist comprised 32 names.
What moved the market
No single external trigger or news story explained the market move. Internally, gains in a few heavyweight counters were insufficient to offset losses concentrated in refinery and fertiliser names. Among notable movers, POL (Pakistan Oilfields Limited) rose to 667.04 (+1.58%), and MEBL (Meezan Bank Limited.) gained to 528.61 (+0.48%). By contrast, NRL (National Refinery Limited) led declines at 555.44 (-3.53%), followed by FATIMA (Fatima Fertilizer Co. Ltd.) at 134.56 (-3.15%), KEL (K-Electric Ltd.) at 5.79 (-2.85%) and ATRL (Attock Refinery Ltd) at 1,088.78 (-2.83%).
Rupee, gold and oil
Foreign exchange and commodities moved unevenly. The US dollar was unchanged in the reported level at 276.6 PKR. Gold fell sharply: Gold per 10 grams was reported at 351,639 PKR, down -7,496 (‑2.09%). Global crude also retreated; Brent crude was at 112.9 USD per barrel, down -2.91 USD (‑2.51%).
Economy watch
Key official price and policy settings reported earlier in the week remained in focus. The State Bank of Pakistan's policy rate stood at 12% as of Wednesday, the SBP reported. Retail fuel prices published by the Government showed petrol at Rs376.06 per litre and diesel (HSD) at Rs398.07 per litre as of Wednesday.
What to watch
- Any further moves in commodity markets — particularly Brent crude and gold — after today’s falls, and their spill‑over to energy and refining names on the bourse.
- Foreign exchange stability around the reported 276.6 level for the US dollar and any FX flows that could affect market sentiment.
- The policy backdrop: the existing State Bank policy rate of 12% and any commentary from official sources that could alter interest‑rate expectations.
- Individual earnings or corporate announcements from major movers on the watchlist of 32 stocks that could drive sectoral trends.
