The Civil Aviation Officers Association of Pakistan (CAOP) has urged the Karachi airport authorities to ease the recently imposed restrictions and consider implementing advanced technological solutions to enhance security without causing inconvenience to passengers.
New Restrictions Following Recent Attack
In response to a recent attack on a Chinese convoy near the airport, which resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals, airport management introduced stricter security protocols. Visitors are now required to present a ticket copy and their national identity card when entering the airport premises. Additionally, the number of people allowed to see off or receive passengers has been limited.
Authorities have also taken steps to block the road from Model Colony to Jinnah Terminal and established checkpoints on routes from Pehlwan Goth and Star Gate, further complicating traffic flow and causing significant congestion.
CAOP Advocates for a Balanced Approach
In a letter addressed to the Director Vigilance of the Pakistan Airport Authority, CAOP Chairman Zarin Gul Durrani expressed support for enhanced security measures but voiced concerns about the unintended impact on passengers. He noted that the current restrictions might not effectively contribute to heightened security and instead create unnecessary inconvenience for those visiting the airport.
Durrani emphasized that security efforts should be carefully targeted, focusing on individuals who pose genuine risks, rather than imposing broad restrictions on the general public.
Proposals for Technological Upgrades
The CAOP chief recommended leveraging modern security tools, including:
- CCTV Surveillance: Expanded camera coverage for real-time monitoring.
- Biometric Scanners: Enhanced identification and verification of passengers.
- AI-Based Threat Detection: Use of artificial intelligence to spot suspicious behavior and potential threats.
He argued that these measures would bolster airport security while maintaining a seamless experience for passengers and their families.
Emphasis on Enhanced Security Training
Durrani also highlighted the need for comprehensive training programs for security personnel. He stressed that equipping staff with advanced training would enable them to respond effectively to potential threats, thus reinforcing overall passenger safety.
“Empowering the security staff through high-level training is crucial for handling unforeseen situations,” Durrani stated, underscoring the importance of preparedness in maintaining a secure airport environment.
The association hopes that by adopting these recommendations, airport authorities can strike a balance between ensuring robust security and minimizing disruptions for travelers.
