China Calls for Joint Action on Security of Nationals in Pakistan

Expressing heightened security concerns, China urged joint counterterrorism efforts with Pakistan to protect Chinese nationals working within the country. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong emphasized at an international conference on “China at 75: A Journey of Progress, Transformation and Leadership,” organized by the Pakistan-China Institute (PCI) in Islamabad, that both countries should work together to hold accountable those involved in attacks against Chinese citizens.

“China wants to see actions against those behind these attacks, and it is hoped that Pakistan will ensure the security of Chinese nationals,” Ambassador Jiang said.

In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reassured the ambassador that Pakistan is fully committed to safeguarding Chinese workers and stated he would soon visit China alongside President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss specific security measures. Dar hinted at recent arrests of perpetrators but refrained from disclosing all details publicly.

During his speech, Dar addressed security challenges, including the infiltration of militants from Afghanistan and stressed the need to end activities that compromise national security, indirectly referencing former ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed’s actions in Kabul that allowed the release of insurgents under a ‘reconciliation’ strategy.

On economic relations, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the One-China Policy and pledged to advance the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into its second phase, despite Pakistan’s debt of $34 billion, which includes loans and investment-related liabilities. Dar also highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding diplomatic efforts, recalling negotiations with the U.S. and recent requests for the release of Aafia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayyed, at the event, acknowledged China’s noninterference approach and progressive vision, calling CPEC a key component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative as both countries prepare to enter the next phase of the collaboration.
