Chris Evans Clears Up Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe

Chris Evans, best known for portraying Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has officially denied rumors that he will be making a comeback in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.

In an interview with Esquire, Evans addressed the ongoing speculation, saying:

“That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”

Evans’s depiction of Steve Rogers/Captain America has been a cornerstone of the MCU, beginning with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 and culminating in his emotional exit in Avengers: Endgame (2019). His character’s departure paved the way for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon to inherit the Captain America shield, with Mackie set to star in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World film, which opens on February 14, 2025.

Mackie Weighs In on Evans’s Return

When questioned about Evans’s potential return in Avengers: Doomsday, Mackie admitted that he was unaware of any such plans:

“I didn’t know! I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.’”

Mackie, who is also slated to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, said he only found out about the rumored return after hearing about it from his manager.

Avengers: Doomsday and the Russo Brothers

The much-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on May 1, 2026. Directed by the Russo brothers, the film will also feature Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom. However, despite the cast’s return, it appears Evans’s retirement from the MCU remains intact.
