Coalition Partners Applaud Faiz Hameed’s Court Martial, PTI Remains Silent

The government’s decision to initiate court martial proceedings against former spymaster Faiz Hameed for his alleged involvement in victimizing the owner of a private housing society has been widely praised by coalition partners. However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chose to remain reserved, referring to the matter as an internal issue of the army.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan remarked that the military’s actions fall under its own jurisdiction, highlighting that the Pakistan Army is a disciplined and organized institution with established procedures for handling both serving and retired officers.

In contrast, several government and coalition leaders openly supported the move. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the court martial as a “right decision,” while Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Senator Afnan Ullah Khan, and PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira expressed similar sentiments.

PML-N leaders anticipate that a deeper probe will uncover multiple charges against Faiz Hameed, with Defense Minister Khawaja Asif suggesting that Hameed’s influence extended to the events of May 9.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui mentioned that the investigation might reveal Hameed’s political meddling, citing his involvement in parliamentary proceedings and his support for PTI legislation. He also alleged that Hameed had influenced the general elections, controlled media, and attempted to manipulate the judiciary.

Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah speculated that sufficient evidence had been found to justify the court martial, accusing Hameed of orchestrating political interference, including the Faizabad sit-in, which disrupted Islamabad for weeks in 2017.

PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira commended the military’s internal accountability, noting that the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against a high-ranking officer like Faiz Hameed underscored the gravity of the offenses. He also acknowledged the Supreme Court’s role in upholding the rule of law within both the government and military.

In a televised appearance, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif asserted that Faiz Hameed had continued to wield influence in political matters even after his retirement, potentially playing a role in the nationwide riots on May 9 following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.
