Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced the commencement of commercial tight gas production from its Nur West Well-1, located in the Sujawal district of Sindh. This marks a significant milestone for the exploration company.
**Policy Background and Production Details**
This development follows the introduction of the Tight Gas (Exploration & Production) Policy 2024 earlier this year, aimed at boosting exploration and production of unconventional hydrocarbon reserves. The policy offers a 40% premium on the zonal price established by the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Policy 2012, a measure approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI).
OGDCL, Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, operates the Nur West Well-1, which was drilled to a depth of 2,975 meters. The well, which previously yielded a gas discovery on April 8 this year, now produces 1.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) with a wellhead flowing pressure of 1050 PSI from the Lower Guru formation (‘A’ Sand).
Integration and Technological Methods
The extracted gas has been integrated into the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) network, contributing to the national gas supply infrastructure. Due to the tight formation of the well, traditional testing methods were unsuccessful, prompting the use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to achieve production viability.
Hydraulic fracturing involves injecting water, sand, and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells to crack deep rock formations, allowing the release of natural gas or oil. This technique is essential for extracting tight gas, which is found in rocks with low permeability requiring significant fracturing to produce economically.
The successful implementation of this method and the new policy’s incentives represent key advancements in Pakistan’s energy sector.
