On Wednesday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan expressed his concerns over the government’s alleged efforts to amend the Constitution in a bid to extend the terms of certain officials, whom he referred to as “three umpires.”
Speaking from Adiala Jail, where he is being held, Imran criticized the government’s reliance on constitutional amendments after losing what he described as political battles. He suggested that these amendments are aimed at legitimizing fraudulent election results and protecting individuals currently in power. According to Imran, the government’s actions stem from their failure to address the events of May 9 and their subsequent attempts to dismantle the PTI.
He accused the authorities of targeting him with over 140 legal cases prior to May 9, and noted that efforts to remove him from the political landscape have only intensified since. Imran speculated that if a new chief justice takes office, the real story of the May 9 events would be revealed.
When questioned about Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s role in the current political landscape, Imran remained evasive, simply stating that all political forces should unite for democracy. He added that if Maulana Fazlur Rehman stands with democratic principles, it is a positive development.
Referring to the Humoodur Rahman Commission Report, Imran compared the current situation to the actions of Yahya Khan, whom the report accused of undermining democracy to preserve his own power. He warned that the rule of law is being eroded, and expressed concern that faith in the judiciary, particularly the subordinate courts, is dwindling.
In the same conversation, Imran mentioned the crackdown on PTI supporters in Lahore ahead of a planned rally, vowing that the rally would proceed regardless of government efforts to stop it.
Separately, the Special Accountability Court in Islamabad postponed the hearing of the Al-Qadir Trust reference — involving a financial scandal concerning Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi — due to the absence of the defence lawyers.
