Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana reserved his verdict on the acquittal plea of Bushra Bibi, wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, in the £190 million settlement reference. The decision is expected to be announced today, Thursday.
The court held its session at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, where both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) opposed the acquittal, but cross-examination of the NAB investigating officer could not take place due to the absence of PTI’s lawyer.
Bushra Bibi’s legal representative, Usman Riaz Gul, argued for her acquittal. The court also declared a contempt petition against the NAB chairman irrelevant, stating that the plea for acquittal rendered it unnecessary.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan, speaking informally at the jail, warned of a nationwide protest if any attempts were made to undermine the Supreme Court’s authority. He expressed concerns over the appointment of “corrupt and incompetent individuals” to key positions and linked them to national decline, including the Pakistan cricket team’s recent losses. He also highlighted delays in high-profile cases, including those involving Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Asif Zardari, blaming these delays on the pending NAB ruling in his case.
Imran also mentioned attempts to close down Al-Qadir University, stressing the potential impact on public institutions like Shaukat Khanum Hospital. He reaffirmed that any attempt to destroy the Supreme Court’s integrity would lead to widespread protests.
