Dhaka University Lifts Ban on Pakistani Students

Dhaka University (DU) has officially lifted its ban on admitting students from Pakistan, ending an eight-year restriction that signals a renewed commitment to academic collaboration between the two countries.

Decision Details

  • Date and Leadership:
The decision was taken during a syndicate meeting on November 13, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan, according to Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin) Prof Sayma Haque Bidisha.
  • Policy Revision:
    • Pakistani students can now enroll at Dhaka University.
    • Bangladeshi students will also gain opportunities to pursue higher education in Pakistan.

A Step Toward Academic Collaboration

Prof Bidisha emphasized that the decision is rooted in academic priorities, aiming to facilitate opportunities for students from both nations. She stated:

“At one point, ties with Pakistan were cut, but Dhaka University is an academic institution. Many of our students need to visit Pakistan for scholarships or academic conferences. We resolved this issue through discussion to restore normal relations.”

Non-Political Decision

The lifting of the ban is positioned as a purely academic initiative, separate from political tensions, such as Pakistan’s stance on the 1971 genocide.

“This is about academic cooperation, not political dialogue,” Bidisha clarified.

Historical Context

The ban had been imposed in December 2015 under then-Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique during an emergency meeting. Its removal marks a significant policy shift, likely to enhance educational and cultural ties between the two nations.

Outlook

The move is expected to:

  1. Foster Academic Exchange: Increase collaboration in research, scholarships, and conferences.
  2. Bridge Gaps: Strengthen mutual understanding and cultural ties between the student communities.

While the decision may spark debate in certain circles, it reflects Dhaka University’s dedication to advancing education beyond political divides.
