What is driving it

The equity advance this week was led by cement and fertiliser names, repeatedly cited in market briefs as the primary drivers of the gains — see the market notes for Mon 2 Nov (Mon 2 Nov), Tue 3 Nov (Tue 3 Nov), Wed 4 Nov (Wed 4 Nov) and Thu 5 Nov (Thu 5 Nov). Friday's pullback was attributed to slides in select heavyweights (Fri 6 Nov). The government’s fuel price notification during the week may also be relevant to sectoral flows; see the report on petrol and diesel reductions (Wed 4 Nov).

The bigger picture

This single week accounts for the month-to-date strength: the KSE-100 is 4.65% higher this week and month so far, led by industrials and financials. Oil's slide is a notable headwind for refinery names (several refiners are among the week's losers), while the rupee's narrow range shows no immediate shock to currency-sensitive flows.

What investors should watch

  • Moves in cement and fertiliser stocks — repeatedly cited as the engine of the rally (Mon 2 Nov, Tue 3 Nov, Wed 4 Nov, Thu 5 Nov).
  • Performance of select heavyweights after Friday's slide (Fri 6 Nov).
  • Government fuel price notifications and their sectoral impact (Wed 4 Nov).
