The Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (FBISE) in Islamabad has officially approved a new grading system, which will replace numerical marks with letter grades. This system also abolishes the practice of awarding first, second, and third position rankings. The move aims to modernize the evaluation process and focus on students’ overall performance rather than numerical competition.
The new grading system, set to be implemented next year by the FBISE, uses the following scale:
- A++ (Exceptional): 95 and above
- A+ (Excellent): 90-94
- A (Excellent): 85-89
- B++ (Very Good): 80-84
- B+ (Good): 75-79
- B (Fairly Good): 70-74
- C (Above Average): 60-69
- D (Average): 50-59
- E (Below Average): 40-49
- F (Unsatisfactory): Below 40
Despite FBISE’s approval, education boards in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan have yet to adopt the new system. However, Sindh is expected to follow suit soon.
Sindh Universities & Boards Secretary Abbas Baloch stated that Sindh is in the final stages of approving the grading policy, with a formal notification expected in the coming days. The policy will be applied to all education boards in Sindh for class IX and class XI exams starting in 2025.
Dr. Nasir Ansar, Executive Director of Ziauddin University Examination Board, confirmed that private boards are fully prepared to implement the new grading system for the same academic years.
